Welcome to The Game Manager! I am your host. Please call me Evan, or TGM if you prefer.
This site arose from postings on Mischievous Ramblings, my personal blog. Eventually there were enough on the subject of managing software development that I just decided to start a special purpose blog, although I’m sure some of those posts will still happen over there. There is already content here that was not previously published on Ramblings.
This is a place where I hope to share some of my experience at managing software development (with an emphasis upon game development, although there’s less difference between games and “mainstream” applications than you might think from a management perspective) and possibly some experience about programming as well. Remember that “experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want,” so some of these stories will be ones of doom and gloom. The intent is to provide you with ways to predict problems and avoid them, or to find good ways out of trouble once you’re in it, since even the best of us make mistakes.
I plan to write at least one good sized post per week. I think that’s enough to keep people interested and coming back, and it’s not soo much that I won’t be able to work on my other projects (including a book proposal on this very material). Comments will be enabled so long as I can keep ahead of the comment spammers, and if I can’t we’ll find some other way to discuss.
Naturally, I have brought this blog live (it’s been here for a bit already but there’s been no publicity, no links, no marketing or anything) before it’s quite ready, because that’s the nature of software development and I had set a hard ship date of 1 June for reasons that seemed good to me at the time. You’ll see some changes (version 1.1?) in the immediate future, including categories and probably a different look (in the meantime you can select your preferred “theme” from the nav area).
RSS feeds are already available for the main posts and for comments.
